Seeing Galaxies though Thick and Thin

چکیده

The superimposed pair of spiral galaxies comprising NGC 3314 ooers a unique opportunity to trace the dust properties in a spiral galaxy. We analyze multicolor HST imaging, supported by ground-based near-IR imaging and ber-array spectroscopy to measure dust extinction in the foreground Sc galaxy NGC 3314A, which is backlit by the Sb system NGC 3314B. The superposition allows us to measure extinctions over a wide range of galactocentric radii in the foreground galaxy, from 0.4-4.5 kpc. In the outer half of the disk, the extinction is strongly localized in discrete dust lanes, including some patches whose galactic setting is clear only because of associated H emission at the foreground velocity. These dust features show an extinction curve with a slope close to the Galactic mean (R = 3:5 0:3) over a range in galactocentric radius from 1.6 to 3.8 kpc, with no radial trend. Using the I ? K color of the background nucleus, we derive an extinction A I = 3:3 through the disk at a projected distance 400 pc from the nucleus of NGC 3314A. The extinction in even the inner disk of NGC 3314A is quite patchy, since background H emission is detected from all parts of the system. Local anticorrelations between foreground and background line emission demonstrate that the dust is concentrated to star-forming regions, as has been found for the blue light in several systems. Colors of dust lanes in NGC 3314A which are projected only partially against the background disk indicate that the dust scale height in the foreground disk is substantially smaller than that of the stars. The color-intensity behavior of the net light in these regions tracks the predictions of a thin-layer model closely.

Seeing Galaxies Through Thick and Thin: I. Optical Opacity Measures in Overlapping Galaxies RAYMOND E. WHITE III AND WILLIAM C. KEEL

We describe the use of partially overlapping galaxies to provide direct measurements of the effective absorption in galaxy disks, independent of assumptions about internal disk structure. The non-overlapping parts of the galaxies and symmetry considerations are used to reconstruct, via differential photometry, how much background galaxy light is lost in passing through the foreground disks. Deep surface photometry of edge - on spirals in Abell galaxy clusters : constraining environmental effects

Context. There is a clear scarcity of structural parameters for stellar thick discs, especially for spiral galaxies located in high-density regions, such as galaxy clusters and compact groups. Aims. We have modelled the thin and thick discs of 4 edge-on spirals located in Abell clusters: NGC 705, ESO243G49, ESO187G19, LCSBS0496P. Deep I band images of NGC 705 were taken from the HST archive, wh...

Thick Disks of Lenticular Galaxies ⋆ 3 D - photometric thin / thick disk decomposition of eight edge - on S 0 galaxies

Thick disks are faint and extended stellar components found around several disk galaxies including our Milky Way. The Milky Way thick disk, the only one studied in detail, contains mostly old disk stars (≈ 10 Gyr), so that thick disks are likely to trace the early stages of disk evolution. Previous detections of thick disk stellar light in external galaxies have been originally made for early-t...

The Kinematics of Thick Disks in Nine External Galaxies

We present kinematic measurements of thin and thick disk components in a sample of nine edge-on galaxies. We extract stellar and ionized gas rotation curves at and above the galaxies’ midplanes using the Ca ii triplet absorption features and Hα emission lines measured with the GMOS spectrographs on Gemini North and South. For the higher mass galaxies in the sample, we fail to detect differences...

A Structural and Dynamical Study of Late-type, Edge-on Galaxies: Ii. Vertical Color Gradients and the Detection of Ubiquitous Thick Disks

We present an analysis of optical (B −R) and optical-infrared (R −Ks) color maps for 47 extremely late-type, edge-on, unwarped, bulgeless disk galaxies spanning a wide range of mass. The color maps show that the thin disks of these galaxies are embedded within a low surface brightness red envelope. This component is substantially thicker than the thin disk (a/b ∼ 4:1, vs > 8:1), extends to at l...
